Basically, the idea for this came to me as I was studying a well-known image of Bob Marley in the winter of 2002. This particular image was a poster mosaic composed of little pictures of Bob, and each picture was a square. As I was studying this, I must have had a beer in my hand because it occurred to me that a bottle cap has essentially the same dimensions as a square, and therefore I should be able to replicate the image using bottle caps! My friends thought it was an interesting idea, but I could tell they had no idea how serious I can get about things like this!!! To make a long story short, it took me a little over 2 years to collect the proper-colored bottle caps to make up the different tones in the image, but after I had what I needed it did not take long for me to complete the mosaic. It stands a majestic 6.5 feet tall by 4 feet wide. It requires at least 25 feet distance to really get the holistic image as the caps blend together to make Bob’s face come to life. I had it prominently displayed in my apartment for the first couple of years, and everyone who visited was able to take in the bottle cap mosaic of Bob Marley. More than one person said that Bob talked to them as they gazed at him in bottle cap form. I believe them. It really is him.
