Great to read this - it was my first ever gig and I was just 14. Was only saying to my mum last week that I still can't believe she let me go - she replied that I'd probably not told her I was going .... She might have a point.

I don't remember too much about the gig but I too was made up that steel pulse were supporting (ha ha as I type this steel pulse have just started playing ku klux klan on bbc4). My memory loss might be down to that ganja haze - and the added fact I was stood at one point between two dreads who I think were a just a bit surprised by a skinny white 14 yr old girl roots rocking. They passed me my first ever spiff :-)

I've always said there will never be another gig that can touch my first, and hearing other British reggae artists talk on the BBC tonight about seeing Marley in concert, and it being a spiritual experience, brought it all back to me. I've remained a huge reggae fan, but marley's lyrics are so incredible and remain so poignant today.

Oh and in my fourth year of (all girls grammar) school, each form was allowed to play one 'pop tune' in our year assembly and discuss it's meaning. After seeing Marley live and ramming down all my form mates throats there was no way anyone was getting a look in. Not Candle in the Wind for our form but Bob Marley and the Wailers - War ...... Until the colour of a man's skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes..... discuss year 4!

My Dad died on the day I left school 24June 1980 - 2 years and 2 days after that seminal first gig. I was devastated. In less than a year Bob was gone too. RIP two of the most influential blokes in my life!

That's enough of my ramblings - I just wish someone would dig out a recording of that gig!

I attended Peckham Manor from 1976 til 1981 and saw the photos Keith Baugh took.. Would ahve been amazing to have seen such a legend before his prime. All credit tio Keith Baugh who was also a massive Bob Dillion fan and open minded with his teaching

Ciao,

Bellissimo articolo.

Grazie mille!

Did you read Booker's entire press release? You reference it, and included the quote from Rita's, but it doesn't seem like you really took time to read through it (if at all). The entire press release can be found at Michael Santucci's website. He's the man representing Booker. http://www.spl-law.com/blog/

Many of the businesses Rita is targeting were founded for, and with, Cedella Marley-Booker. "Mama Marley's" is a restaurant chain made for, and with, Cedella. The Bob Marley Movement of Jah People began as the first official Bob Marley Fan club, in 1978. Guess who it was made for and with. After she passed, Booker was given control these charitable businesses, which Rita is now trying to take hold of. She had 20 or more years to make these moves, but knew she could never win against Cedella. Booker is being wrongfully targeted, just because his name. He's just as much a "Marley" as anyone else, and lived with Cedella in Miami for years after Bob passed. You say Booker 'reneged' on agreements for trademark, but if you read what they were trying to control you'd be much more sympathetic.

Just take the time to see both sides of the story, its obvious you know, respect, and love Bob and his music very much. Give the same concern to Cedella and Booker as they try, and tried, to do the same.
