Unanswered: Top 100 jamaican songs – 1962 – 2012

Per Clinton Lindsay, giornalista e conduttore radiofonico, lo scorso 6 agosto è stata l’occasione per far conoscere a tutti noi, un’altra delle sue speciali classifiche, come sempre redatte in collaborazione con altri esperti del settore. Si tratta della chart forse più attesa e temeraria, visto che ha lo scopo di scegliere le cento canzoni più belle della musica jamaicana, un’impresa per certi aspetti impossibile, vista la quantità di materiale a disposizione. Come sempre prima di lanciarci nella lettura sempre avvincente e foriera di disaccordi e polemiche della classifica, soffermiamoci sulle prime dieci posizioni. Sul trono più alto troviamo nuovamente colui che non a caso è The King della musica reggae.

La canzone regina di questa speciale chart è “One Love” di Bob Marley, che prende così un altro riconoscimento dopo essere stata eletta la canzone del ventesimo secolo da diverse giornali specializzati. Giusto sottolineare che un metro di giudizio utilizzato nello scegliere le canzoni, è anche il loro impatto internazionale in termini di successo e influenza.

E infatti al secondo posto troviamo “Israelites” di Desmond Dekker, una delle più grandi hit collezionato da un artista jamaicano. Sull’ultimo podio disponibile sale Jimmy Cliff con un altro brano simbolo e che ha fatto epoca, si tratta di “The Harder They Come”.

Restiamo per le restanti sette posizioni ancorati ad un periodo che va dalla fine degli anni ’60 agli inizi degli anni ’70. Appartengono a questo lasso temporale brani come “Charry Oh Baby” di Eric Donaldson, “You Don’t Care” dei The Techniques, “54-46 That’s My Number” di Toots And Maytals. Il primo brano profondamente roots si attesta in settima posizione grazie agli Abyssinians e alla loro grandissima e mistica “Satta Massa Gana”, che precede la tune prodotta da Lesile Kong “Rivers Of Babylon” dei Melodians.

Sorprendente e meritevole il riconoscimento dato a Phyllis Dillon con l’immensa “Don’t Stay Away”. Se ad aprire la Top 100 Jamaican Songs c’è il re, a chiudere le prime dieci posizioni, troviamo il principe con “No Man Is An Island”.
