Unanswered: differences between 'complete wailers' and Universal boxsets
hi guys!
I've got this question: are there songs on 'The Complete Bob Marley & The Wailers 1967-1972' boxsets that are not on the Universal boxsets (Groovin' Kingston, Fy-ah Fy-ah and Man to Man) or vice versa ??? (also versions/alternates).
And which one has the best liner notes?
Just asking 'cause I want to buy one of these
(ok, I know, I could check myself, but I'm lazy and maybe someone here knows it from the top of his head )

As far as liner notes the new Universal releases do not come close to the much superior notes from "The Complete" series. Not even close. Also I would still be very curious to see how much Universal is giving to the 3 original Wailers as far as royalties. The Complete series paid all 3 very well from those sales. I would urge you to buy the JAD releases over the Universal releases. Universal deserves no more of your hard earned money. A few more buy-outs and they'll own the world. It is amazing how much Universal owns. Just look at the back of any recent CD or DVD. 9 out of 10 times you'll see Universal.

another question: does anybody know if the songs on one of these boxsets (or on both) are edited...or straight from vinyl/boardtapes? All of the songs or only a few?
The Universal Boxets are availible at such shops as MediaMarkt etc.
One funny thing about the complete Wailers, well i live near Rotterdam and One time i went to a place called VENLO in the netherlands. I went to the FREE RECORD SHOP and i bought al the 10 cd's of the complete wailers for 100 euro (all my vacationmoney ha ha ). I see them everywhere, you can buy them in Holland at FREE RECORD SHOP, VAN LEEST, MEDIAMARKT, VELVET, FAME, etc etc. I have seen them very often, they are easy to get in HOLLAND. Back in 1998/1999 they released vol 1, 2 and 3 in a boxet and bought them at VAN LEEST. They also released a second box, with volume 4, 5 & 6 and bought them i believe also at VAN LEEST. In the summer of 1999 i was in Paris and went to the VIRGIN STORE and bought the 3rd box (keep on skaning/satify my soul jah jah) with volume 7 & 8. So i have exept for vol. 9 & 10 two copy's of each volume but there are some differences on sleeve, like logo etc. Not the music. Only the booklets of the 3rd box with vol. 7 & 8. has frech text from bruno blum, not translated (but the booklets of vol 1 - 10 that i bought in Venlo has all englisch text) In French they where released earlier than the rest i believe. The rest was released if i remember correctly by KOCH.

I?m not sure but I think the JAD boxes now are deleted. So I think it?s quiet a hurry for everyone who wants a copy of her/his own. And I agree the JAD/Universal linernotes really sucks while the Complete liner notes is just awesome!

The first 3 releases were and still are very easy to get--vol 1-8. They still sell them in stores in the US. I thought they were issued in both english and french?? They were released initially as vol 1-3 in a box set and vol 4-6 in a box set and vol 7 & 8 together as one but w/ 2 jewel caes. then they re-released vol 1-6 as individual discs.

Then at the end they released vol 9, 10 and 11. 11 only being issued on vinyl and all 3 only being issued in French. At the time of their release Universal was still working out their deal, so they were released but soon after got pulled back and destroyed. Ernie B's had a stock pile of 9-11 that they marked down and sold as quick as possible. I also believe at the time there was not a plan for 9-11 to be done in English as they were more of Bruno's babies at the time. I think he more or less was producing them on that 55 label and doing most of the work on them.
Then they released the 4 CD box set as well as the other Tosh, dub and Rita CD's. Then it all ended.

They also released the REBEL BOXET, with 4 cd's and some tracks that where not released on vol 1-10 also on that 55 label (i have the box and there is a sticker with 55 logo and i don't know wat is underneath so maybe first another logo?)
The box is nice.......
I like the complete wailers but there are some differences i don't know much about the quality but the funeral on the universal box sounds better then the one on the complete wailers....but that's the only song i can remember. I believe that on the site soulrebels.org you can check some differences if i remember correctly!
