[NEWS] President Obama and Bob Marley Article

I came across this article today. It's a brief piece about how President Obama, who faced similar biracial resistance that Bob Marley did, turned to Marley and the Survival album for some clarity. I too am biracial and can attest to feeling the need to choice either White or Black. I have also turned to the music of Marley at times for insight. Anyway, enjoy!

"the beat" magazine did a pretty interesting, and aesthetically pleasing article in one of the Bob Marley collectors edition issues, but thanks for the link, I didnt know obama liked survival

I'll have to take a look at that article! Sadly, I only bought a few issues before The Beat stopped production. Like an idiot I always meant to buy back issues but never pulled the trigger. However, I am a college student and am able to access them in the library and download them from an archive database. Sometime in the future I'd like to try to get my hands on some back issues.

Very happy to see that Mr Obama loves Survival because is my favourite album ever.
In the 70's there was only disco music and Bob's toughest album was a light in the dark for me. I'm white but I was a "survivor" at that time for age, financial, private reasons

White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, whatever, we all face socio-economic, racial, or cultural issues in our lives that force us to question our lives and the lives of others. I'm glad we ay turn to the music of Marley for guidance in our introspection. I'm a social worker in the inner city and I see these struggles everyday. I love referring to the lyrics of Marley to shed light on difficult situations that, somewhat similar to kids in Trench Town, low income Blacks (and other people of color) face. Great insight Marco.

Those are very strong lyrics. I love it when artists cross the socially imposed color line to side and stand up for the downtrodden. I'm sure their was some bigoted fans Springsteen pissed off with those lyrics. However, he must have cared more about his message and less of what some racist fans thought.

The Ghost Of Tom Joad from Springsteen is a version of Tom Joad from folk legend/social activist Woody Guthrie who on his turn took the character from John Steinbeck's famous book The Grapes of Wrath.
